So I'm just in the gathering stage....and it may never happen.... but I'm considering a 4.3 for a future project. I'm not looking for crazy horse power numbers. Think more along the lines of practical and budget friendly. I'm interested to hear peoples experience or comments. Some conversation starter questions (choose one, all, or none):

1. What year of 4.3 motor is the "best"? Why? (assume gas and not a propane conversion)
2. What type of computer/wiring needs to be done? Is factory ECM sufficient? Is there a better alternative? Programming needed?
3. Are there any worthwhile mods to do? (ie cam, head work, etc) Or is stock fine?
4. Best auto tranny to run? (no adapter plate)
5. Best manual tranny to run? (no adapter plate)

I know the above questions may be of personal preference. But I want to hear what ppl think....I havent started my google research yet. If I do, maybe I'll post useful finds on this thread to keep it as a useful reference.

I'd like a dual purpose second gen tracker. Thinking possible red tracker by my barn.... Again it's a couple years out.... Currently Leaning towards 4.3 w/700r4

I believe you can get a TBI 4.3 with Vortec heads. Gets you kind of the best of both worlds as far as simplicity and power goes.

I would expect nothing other than a tracker or a suzuki as a build of yours. I saw a bunch of 4.3 parts and a whole engine and trans on letgo yesterday. As far as the 700r4 goes i had one that used to be in the truck that is now my rig and i didnt have good luck with it. But i know people that love them. I know a guy who has had one in his full size rig for a long time hasnt had any issues but like you said ots mostly personal preference and quality of the used parts you start with.
Are you planning to solid axle swap or stick with ifs?

I had a 1990 S-10 for many years with a TBI version of the 4.3. It ran to 240k without a single problem. It was still a pretty decent motor when I sold it with only a little smoke on start up. Went through one alternator and a couple water pumps during it's life, but that's about it.

I think my 700r4 is on its 5th season in the jeep and who knows what it came out of before that. They have a bad reputation for on road shit but I've been more than happy with mine. I have another one in the garage for when this one goes out. Id really like to put a reverse manual valve body in this one but I'm afraid as soon as I touch it I'll have a problem.

I'm still.rocking a 4.3.

1992 TBI 4.3 stock
700r4 from a stocker

I wouldn't do a cpi motor or newer efi version. I think 94.5 was cpi thru 1997.

If you can find a factory tbi motor with lowish mileage that would be the best bet.
Factory wiring is pretty simple on them and most accessories from a similar year 350 crossover.

I don't think it's worth doing any mods to them motor wise. They run decent stock and are dependable. Maybe a typhoon/cyclone setup would be cool.

No advice on on a manual setup, but sm465 should bolt up and they are about I destructable and have a retarded low first gear.

Forgot to add, I've been wheeling the same 700r4 for 8 years, has been ran low on fluid multiple times and just keeps on truckin.
