To me, wheelbase should be factored along with many other things. Tire size and belly height probably the biggest. And I agree you should always try to maximize approach/departure angle. Personally:

I like 95" on 35" tires, 16-18"belly
I like 103ish on 37s, 18-20"
I like 110-115 on 40s, 20" belly

With 44s I'd say you could stretch it out and 120 probably not too bad. 47s? Well thats crazy. You could probably go further...Sounds like rockwells and big blocks type tires...

my old setup was 101" xj wheelbase on 36s and I loved to overall setup. now with tons and 44s im just not sure on wb.

everyone seems to be going with 40-43 stickies. I just want to be different which I why I was considering the 47s.

I liked the 4runner which was 109 on 36, but it was a bit tall. Bronco is 98 in 35 and becuase it's a bit tall, it's also very tippy.
